Landscape Lighting Tips

Tips on taking photos at a event that’s at night..?
I am going to a halloween event that’s called scream town. (http://www.screamtown.com/) I have been there last year and its is pretty awesome. I am into photography and I was thinking that I bring my camera this year and take photos. Its at night so I need some tips. I have a Canon 30d and 1000d with a 18-55mm lens, 50 f1.8, 75-300mm, and a canon 480ex ii speed light. I was thinking that I bring a tripod, but I do not want to lug around all this stuff. so I just want to bring the 30d with 18-55mm and the speed light. I was thinking that I shoot in manual and expose it correctly in the background and just use a fill flash to keep it still so I don’t need a tripod.. I know I need a tripod for landscapes and long exposure shots. Any tips though ,I would like to use my camera with a tripod but I don’t want to lug it around. Thanks for tips!
I took pictures trick or treating with a canon 20D, 18-55mm zoom lens, and speedlite. Lugging around a tripod was out of the question as we kept on walking around.
Unless you are very comfortable using manual mode on both your camera and speelite, I recommend not relying solely on manual mode (at least not on the flash).
You won’t be able to expose the background correctly if it’s nighttime or if it’s too dark (you would need a tripod for that, since it would be a slow shutter speed). I guess you could try using the second curtain sync on your flash, but your pics still won’t come out the way you probably want them to.
What I do, when I want to use my camera in manual mode at night or in the dark, is to set the shutter speed at the flash sync speed (or faster, if you want to use high-speed sync) and just try to estimate the flash power I need. I may keep the flash power constant and just vary my aperture, or vice versa (which is harder to do, at least for me). I figure since the background will be dark anyway, I may as well use a fast shutter speed to avoid camera shake. This may or may not work for you, but that’s what I’ve done in the past (with varying results).

Still Life Painting Atelier: An Introduction to Oil Painting $35 The equivalent of a foundation course in traditional oil painting for beginning to intermediate level artists, this in-depth book uses the still life as a practical way to master oil techniques. The still life is a practical, forgiving genre as it does not require the likeness of a portrait or the accurate proportions of the figure and, unlike the landscape, it doesn’t change with the weather. Instead, it gives aspiring artists ample time to study and the opportunity to look closer. It can be used as a purely formal subject for drawing and painting techniques, or a platform for emotional expression using personal symbolism and imagery. However, though the still life is used throughout as a teaching tool, this is first and foremost a book about  oil painting. It begins with simple compositions that build to more complex arrangements. Starting with essential information on how to best set up your studio—including lighting, equipment, materials (paints, solvents, brushes, mediums), and preparing your canvas and paper for oil painting—Still Life Painting Atelier then offers concrete lessons in a logical progressive sequence, with step-by-step illustrations, finished paintings, diagrams and tips. Chapters cover:    • How to address composition through thumbnail sketches and line drawings   • Using underpainting to study the characteristics of light and shade   • The basics of color theory and color mixing   • How to use a variety of brushes to create sharp and soft edges   • Techniques that are helpful when painting metal and glass   • How to apply glazing and scumbling to bring luminosity and texture |
